Students and staff faced off in a basketball game on Thursday, March 15, 2018. The game was coordinated by Mrs. Chelsea Boyd’s third hour Contemporary Issues class. All proceeds they made went to the Jefferson County Court Appointed Special Advocates or CASA.

The entry was a minimum $1 donation and audience members could also buy raffle tickets for the opportunity to throw a pie in the losing team’s faces. When the staff won with a score of 71 to the students’ 63 points, the winning audience members and a few teachers got to throw the pies.

The students came up with the idea of the student versus staff basketball game as one of their service projects for the class. They spent weeks preparing for the event. “We had to find players, write waivers, and make the pies and t-shirts,” player, student, and senior Allen Unterreiner said.

The CASA group has many volunteers who learn to speak for the best interests of children who are dependent on the juvenile courts. They help advocate for these children and find them foster homes and permanent homes. The Jefferson County CASA is one of the new programs that have been started in Missouri.
